:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ps58 -- A weaving through monastic community and the women who serve. : A follow up to In This Small Spot, Welinger gives a magnificent view of the years that tell how Mother Theadore (Pip)served at St. Bridges. The characters are woven through history in the true depth of emotional journey. No one tells a story over so many years like this author. It was so beautiful to see Lauren (Sister Anselma) able to move her life forward. While telling the lives of Pip, her family and love that dedication to her call would see challengged. The overall dedication to a call to community and life where the cost can be so harsh. The characters have flaws, don't have answers to life's events, yet try to serve a call that at times they have no idea what is required. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2021 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Cheryl -- The Continued Search for Spiritual Growth : A sequel to "In this Small Spot" - previous reviewers have adequately given the breakdown of the storyline and various characters portrayed in this book, so I shall not lurch into that. To repeat a previous comment though - it would be an advantage to first read (or re-read) "In this Small Spot" before turning to "An Unlit Candle", as this is a follow-on and the main characters are retained, with a few added for flavour. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from K. Burns -- Another thoughtful and well written story : I am a huge fan of this author and don’t hesitate to purchase her books. She is not really a writer of lesbian stories as much as she is a writer of stories with lesbians in them. As a former confirmed Lutheran and current agnostic with a passing knowledge of the Catholic Church, I found myself both drawn in and repelled by the monastic life of these characters. The author does a great job of describing this life and the characters’ struggles within it. My only reason for marking it down one star is the lack of relationship development between characters. I don’t mean physical so much as emotional. There was very little that made me feel invested in either of the two main relationships in the story. It was very passionless and lacking in emotion. It made it very hard to believe in the lifelong love maintained between two characters in particular. With a little more time devoted to this and a little less to the rites of the monastery, this would be a hands-down five. Kudos to Caren Werlinger! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Carol Anne Douglas -- A Worthy Sequel : This is a worthy sequel/prequel to In a Small Spot, Werlinger's previous novel about nuns falling in love with each other. Werlinger handles the subject sensitively, and so do her protagonists. They take the vow of chastity serioiusly and find themselves in a dilemma when they fall in love. I am personally not that interested in monastic life but Caren has a way of bringing characters to life in their Life struggles and personal journey that pulls you in. This is a wonderful sequel to “in this small spot” in which we see the characters with a developed backstory and the ongoing story of Lauren. The struggles are real, even sad at times, but so rewarding to bring them to an ending that brings closure. I shed tears of joy and sadness and felt touched on deeply emotional level. There are poignant love stories here, followed across time, and told with passion and sensitivity. The convent atmosphere is ever present, pulling the reader fully inside. It’s a wonderful follow up to In This Small Spot which you should read first to get the full impact of the beauty in An Unlit Candle. I’m not even catholic but following the life of this once young and carefree Pip on her spiritual journey I found myself as contemplative as the nuns of St. Bridget. What propels someone to choose a cloistered life? What do they gain? What do they give up or lose when vowing to live a life of duty and chastity? ( Reviewed in Canada on September 24, 2021 )
